Ingredients:
To make dumplings:
  1. Sorghum (Jowar) flour– 200 grams
  2. Water – 200 ml
  3. Rock salt – 1 pinch

To Temper:
  1. Sesame / Gingelly oil – 1/2 teaspoon
  2. Mustard seeds – 1/4 teaspoon
  3. Urad dhal – 1/2 teaspoon
  4. Asafoetida – 1 pinch
  5. Dried Red chilly – 1
  6. Curry leaves – 1 spring
  7. Grated Coconut – 4 teaspoons
  8. Rock salt – As per taste

Method:
  1. Take Sorghum flour in a wide bowl. Add Rock salt to it.
  2. In another vessel, boil water very well.
  3. Pour 3/4 of the boiling water in Sorghum flour bowl. Use a ladle and mix the flour well. If needed add some more water to gather all the flour to make a soft dough. Keep the hot water vessel on the flame until this process is complete. Cover the bowl with a lid and let the dough become slightly cool.
  4. Now take a small quantity of dough and place it in the left hand between the palm & fingers. Pinch a small piece of dough from that and roll into tiny balls in your left palm using right hand. You may make round or flat shaped balls. Repeat the same until the dough is finished.
  5. Place the mini balls in the Idli plate and steam it for 10 minutes. To check the cooking stage, dampen your fingers and touch the dumplings. If the flour does not stick on the fingers, turn-off the flame.
  6. Heat oil in a pan. Add Mustard seeds and Urad dhal and let it splutter. Add Asafoetida powder. Add dried Red chilly piece. Add Curry leaves and sauté for a minute. Add the steamed dumplings and mix everything well. After 2 minutes, add salt & grated Coconut and mix thoroughly. Turn-off the stove. It is ready to eat now.

Note:
  • I learnt this recipe from Padma's Recipe. It is an easy snack recipe. Generally in Tamil Nadu homes, we make dumplings with white rice flour and eat it along with Coconut bites. I tried the same method with this Sorghum flour dumpling as well. It tasted great. You may try this once.
  • Similarly I used the dumplings and prepared Fried Dumplings (just like Fried Rice) which also turned out good.
  • You may also soak these dumplings in gravies made with Green gram, Channa (Chick Peas) etc. and eat for lunch.
