Bisibele bath using Sorghum (Jowar)

Ingredients:
  1. Kodo millet – 1 cup (100 gms)
  2. Toor dhal – 1/4 cup (30 gms)
  3. Water – 3 cups
  4. Vegetables – 4 to 5 types (total 200 grams)
  5. Tomato – 2 medium sized
  6. Sambar (small) Onion – few pieces
  7. Gingelly (Sesame) Oil – 1 tea spoon
  8. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tea spoon
  9. Cumin - 1/4 tea spoon
  10. Cashewnuts – 7 or 8
  11. Curry leaves – 1 spring
  12. Green chilly – 1 no.
  13. Asafoetida – 2 pinches
  14. Turmeric powder – 1 pinch
  15. Rock salt – as per taste

To dry roast & grind: (bisibele bath powder)
  1. Channa dhal – 1 teaspoon
  2. Urad dhal - 1 teaspoon
  3. Dry chilly – 2 nos.
  4. Fenugreek – 1/4 teaspoon
  5. Mustard – 1/4 teaspoon
  6. Cinnamon –1 piece (1/2 inch)
  7. Clove – 3 nos.
  8. Cardamom – 2 nos.
  9. Cumin – 1/2 teaspoon
  10. Coriander seeds – 1 teaspoon
  11. Grated coconut – 2 teaspoons
Method:
  1. Dry roast all the ingredients in the same order given under ‘To dry roast & grind’. When it becomes cool, grind and make a coarse powder and keep aside.
  2. Soak Kodo millet and toor dhal separately 30 minutes before cooking.
  3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker pan. Add mustard and cumin seeds and let it splutter. Add cashewnuts and roast it till it becomes golden brown. Then add small onion, green chilly and curry leaves and sauté for a while. Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, asafoetida powder and rock salt and sauté for few minutes.
  4. Now add all the cut vegetables, Kodo millet and toor dhal and pour required water. Cover it with lid and wait for the first whistle. Then reduce the flame to ‘low’ and wait for 8 minutes. Turn-off the stove.
  5. Open the lid after the pressure is gone. Place the cooker on the stove once again. Now add the Bisibele bath powder in the cooker and mix it thoroughly.  Turn-off the stove after 2 minutes.
  6. Serve hot with Kara bhoondi or potato chips.
Note:
  • We have learnt this recipe from here and tried with Kodo millet instead of rice. It tasted great. You may also use Barnyard, Little or Sorghum (Jowar) millet instead of Kodo millet.
  • Before adding bisibele bath powder, if you find the millet consistency very thick, add little quantity of hot water and keep it on stove for few minutes.
  • Use any 4 or 5 varieties of vegetables of your choice. Only point to remember here is  ‘not to add any vegetable which becomes too mushy in pressure cooking’.  Example – green peas, cauliflower, etc.
